The green hydrogen facility powered by co-located solar photovoltaic and battery storage facility will initially produce 800 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum, building up to in excess of 150,000 tonnes of production to service both domestic and export markets from the Port of Townsville.

Edify is in advanced discussions with motivated off-takers, across power generation, heavy industry and transport looking for an alternate clean fuel source to meet net zero targets.

Edify CEO John Cole said there was an immense opportunity for Townsville to be at the forefront of Australian and global green hydrogen supply.

โ€œBeing the successful applicant for the Townsville Hydrogen Hubs funding is incredibly exciting. It is testament to a lot of hard work and Edifyโ€™s track record in leading innovation in the renewable sector. We look forward to delivering our green hydrogen production facility, initially supplying our domestic customers and thereafter export markets from the Port of Townsville at a large scale, which is the end game.

“Being at the vanguard of what will be a world-class hydrogen hub in Townsville is incredibly motivating. Today is a watershed moment for Townsville.

“There are parallels with the renewable electricity sector from 20 years ago. We thank our many partners including the Federal Government, Queensland Government, German Government Townsville City Council, Siemens Energy, Townsville Enterprise Limited, universities and research partners, local and international customers for buying into the vision and having the stamina to stay with us on the journey to date.โ€

Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said renewable hydrogen was a game changer, opening the door to green metals, green fertiliser, green power and supporting industrial decarbonisation.

โ€œThe whole world needs renewable hydrogen, and regional Australia is ready to provide it.
With its port, expertise in exports and access to Queenslandโ€™s abundant solar resources, Townsville is ideally placed to help power the world with Australian renewable energy and create jobs in regional Australia,โ€ Bowen said.
